Occurring once every four years, the tradition of women being ‘allowed’ to propose to their men has finally come around. The tradition dates back to the 5th Century as upon St Bridget’s complaint, St Patrick gave women the right to propose, but only on a leap year day. Myths and folklore aside, if you are wishing to put matters into your own hands, we’ve selected some of the best locations for the perfect proposal any day of the year.
From beautiful landscapes to iconic settings, there is a multitude of locations to fit any proposal, whether you are wishing to reenact the Notebook in Charleston, South Caroline to the iconic Juliet’s Balcony in Verona, Italy or under the natural phenomenon that is the Northern Lights.
One of the most famous origins of Irish folklore stories, this unusual rock formation resembles a woman’s head when viewed from the North. Local legend has it that the rock is named after Mal, an Irish ‘hag’ who chased her love interest across Ireland, and unfortunately, his feelings weren’t reciprocated. The cliffs run for over 14km and offer amazing panoramic views of the coast so you’ll be sure to find a unique and private location to ‘pop the question’ - hopefully with a better outcome than Mal!
Often considered the most romantic place on earth, Paris has that certain je ne sais quoi that appeals to many proposees. The city of love has a plethora of proposal ‘sweet spots’ from the obvious Eiffel Tower to the more intimate setting of Square René Vivian (opposite the Notre-Dame Cathedral).
Avoid the hustle-bustle of main attractions and find a secluded or scenic spot in central park. With over 50 bridges to choose from in Central Park, Bow Bridge boasts panoramic views across the lake and park. An abundance of photographers operate in the park so ensure you prearrange a shoot to document the 'big ask’.
For those wishing to pull out all the stops this year, nothing says ‘I love you’ more than white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and a beachfront villa. Ease your nerves and pick a ‘proposal package’ offered by many of the resorts. These range from private dinners to underwater proposals with turtles.
With a multitude of cruises on offer, ranging from action-packed all-inclusive and family-friendly to sophisticated adults-only options, why choose one location when you can have a selection of scenic stops to ask that all-important question!
