7 Top Packing Tips For Travelling With Children

With the school holidays fast approaching, it's time to start thinking about packing for your holiday with the kids. As we're sure you know, this can be one of the summer's more stressful events. To help you make it through in one piece, we've brought together our top packing tips. Stick to these and packing is sure to be as stress-free as possible.

Bring plenty of entertainment

Whether you and your family are travelling by train, plane, or automobile, it's important to keep your kids entertained if you want to avoid a chorus of "are we there yet?". So, make sure they have access to a tablet full of games and movies to keep them entertained during transit.

To help maintain your and any fellow passengers' sanity, make sure that your kids have headphones as well. If they don't have a pair already, make sure to pick up one of The Independent's 10 best kids' headphones before your trip.

Always take wet wipes

If you're travelling with kids, there's one thing you never be without: wet wipes. Whether you need to clean up a mucky face on the fly or try to remove a stain before it sets in, a wet wipe can save your bacon.

Pack lots and lots and sunscreen

If you're heading somewhere sunny on your summer holiday, it's important to keep your whole family protected from the sun. While the sunshine is great for your health in small doses, providing an excellent source of vitamin D, overdoing it and burning will give you short-term pain and increase your risk of skin cancer. So, make sure you follow the NHS's guidelines for keeping your kids safe in the sun and keep every member of your family topped up with sunscreen during the trip.

Don't forget the sunglasses

Alongside the sunscreen, make sure every member of your family has a pair of sunglasses to help protect them from the sun. Make sure to pick up a pair for every member of your family that block both UBV and UVA rays. Pack a few spares too in case any get lost or broken, as it's not a good idea to spend too long in full sun without them on.

Invest in insect repellent

Whether you'll be enjoying a staycation this summer or a trip abroad, it's a good idea to pick up some insect repellent to keep the creepy crawlies away. Little ones will appreciate not being bothered by bees and wasps, while it will also help your whole family avoid any nasty bites that can really spoil a holiday.

Bring the right footwear

Whenever you set off on holiday it's important to make sure your family are kitted out in the right footwear. "Bear in mind when your family are trying on shoes that feet swell a bit in the heat, so you want to choose ones for holiday that aren’t too snug," recommends Rachel Clinkard of Charles Clinkard. "It's a good idea to go for lightweight footwear too, and if you get the chance to wear them before your holiday then you are much less likely to have any shoe disasters on your trip."

If you're jetting off on a beach holiday, it's also a good idea to pick up water shoes for the kids. These waterproof slip-ons will protect your little ones' feet from hot sand and rocks, leaving them free to enjoy the beach.

Make sure they've got their favourite toy

If you've got young kids, they might get homesick during the trip. It's therefore a good idea to make sure they've got their favourite toy to help comfort them if they get anxious.

Stick to these tips when it comes time to pack for your next family holiday and, alongside their clothes and toiletries, you're sure to have the essentials covered. As long as you make sure you've got these seven items, you can finish packing without the stress.
