We’re continuing our destination of the week blog feature with a look at another intriguing holiday spot you really need to be adding to your travel hit list. Situated in Northern Montenegro, the relatively unknown resort of Zabljak is the ideal adventure getaway come sun, rain or snow. Read on to find out more about this fascinating destination...
With a population of under 2,000 people, the Northern town of Zabljak is the highest situated town in the Balkans. Despite the small population, the resort packs a punch, with a huge offering of activities and sports for locals and tourists alike to bask in.
The biggest draw to the sleepy town of Zabljak is its close proximity to the UNESCO world heritage site; Durmitor National Park, which is considered to be one of the top natural wonders of the world by SmarterTravel. The park features Europe's deepest gorge which is used for a variety of watersports, but is the perfect backdrop for hiking, abseiling and mountain biking.
Tara Canyon, Durmitor National Park: From water rafting to ziplining, this hotspot is an adrenaline junkies paradise!
Quad Biking: To cover as much of the National Park as possible, try a quad bike tour. Many providers offer different routes based on ability and which type of experience you would like.
Savin Kuk Ski Resort Come winter, the mountains are topped with snow and the area transforms into a buzzing ski resort with routes for both snowboarders and skiers.
Njeguski Steak: This Montenegrin classic is a steak made up of either pork or veal schnitzel that is filled with Njegusi prosciutto (another prized Montenegrin delicacy) and cheese.
Buzara: Usually cooked in summer, this dish contains a mix of shellfish, prawns and shrimps cooked in either red or white wine.
Montenegrin Lamb (in milk) : A unique delicacy, usually served in Northern Montenegro. To make this dish, the meat is slowly stewed in milk with various herbs and vegetables to makes the meat perfectly tender.
Silvia from Heart My Backpack said: “Forget Norway, I think Montenegro might just be the most beautiful country in the world.”
Sonal & Sandro from Drifter Planet said: “Go spend a few days in Durmitor National Park near Žabljak and you wouldn’t want to go back to Kotor’s crowded beaches. This fairyland will make you feel you’re in the Lord of the Rings!”
