Looking for your next adventure? From fireworks in Valletta to tomato throwing festivals near Valencia, city breaks are coming back bigger and better than ever. Whether you're after culture and canals or picturesque views with your glass of port, we've rounded up our top city breaks for 2022!
Best for: Culture
If you're looking for a city break like no other, look no further than Amsterdam! Wander along the picturesque canals, explore Jordaan or uncover the buzzing art scene. Whether you discover the city's history at Rijksmuseum or go chasing windmills in Amsterdam West, there's no shortage of things to see and do. Visit in April, and you'll see the city in all its glory. Weave through streets decked out in colourful tulips for Tulp Festival. Go on, treat yourself to a last-minute city break today…
Best for: Relaxation
Say goodbye to stress and hello to relaxation at Sky Lagoon! Iceland's newest geothermal lagoon boasts unobstructed ocean views just minutes from downtown Reykjavik. Soak up the sights from the infinity-edge pool, a hotspot for stargazing. Did we mention there's also a waterfall, swim-up bar and designer sauna? The spectacular Northern Lights will put on a show if you're lucky. Once you’re feeling refreshed head to the city centre for excellent restaurants and electric nightlife. Those looking for adventure can embark on a whale-watching voyage from the Old Harbour.
Best for: Urban beach breaks
Don't want to choose between city and beach? Valencia gives you both. With gorgeous, sprawling beaches and 300 days of sunshine a year, it's the ideal place to soak up some vitamin D. Beyond the beach, the city's old town boasts striking architecture and vibrant markets. From flamenco to festivals, Valencia is bringing live music back with a bang in 2022. If that wasn't enough, the world's best food fight, La Tomatina, is returning to Buñol in August. Those of you planning to attend, better start practising your throw… If you prefer to eat your food rather than wear it, you can always grab a dish of Valencia's famous paella!
Best for: Pretty sights and Port wine
Porto is a city best explored on foot. Climb to the top of the Clérigos Tower, stroll along tree-lined paths at Crystal Palace gardens or weave through the winding streets of Ribeira. Journey up to the hilltop cathedral, and you'll find stunning architecture with a view to match. Want a break from all the action? Take a romantic boat cruise along Douro River. For fireworks, food and festivities, put the São João festival in your calendar. The streets are set to come alive on the 23rd of June. Don't forget – a trip to Porto isn't complete without sipping the famous Port wine.
Best for: History
Despite its small size, the UNESCO-listed city of Valletta is brimming with impressive historical sites. Marvel at the St John's Co-Cathedral, with its stunning interior; visit the Grandmaster's Palace or take in beautiful harbour views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Aside from history, Valletta has a packed calendar full of festivals and events. Every April, the Malta International Fireworks Festival is held at the Grand Harbour. Trust us when we say it's not to be missed! Malta knows a thing or two when it comes to creating jaw-dropping firework displays. Need a break for all the excitement? Hop on a boat and soak up the sun on a secluded beach in Gozo.
