Food and Drink, Dominican Republic

In the Dominican Republic, you can try and taste a host of diverse foods. Choose from a range of rice dishes, as well as meals with plantain, beans, coconut flavours and traditionally-delicious meat dishes.

Expect to find a beautiful blend of Taíno, Spanish and African cuisine on this tropical island, with plenty of restaurants serving sumptuous local cuisine, too. Treat your tastebuds to a host of flavours; try casabe, guanimos, creme caramel or mangu and much much more.

Café Claro

The Café Claro occupies a lovely position in Cabarete, just a very short way from the hurly-burly of the main street and the beach. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with its simple décor, stone floors and bamboo bar and the food served is simply exquisite, both in taste and its presentation.

Café Claro is a fabulous place to eat in the Dominican; the owner – Sandra and her staff are very welcoming and friendly and do everything they can to ensure you enjoy your visit.

The breakfasts here are exceptional, as well as the traditional cooked breakfast they offer, ranging from omelettes and pancakes to bowls of mixed fruit, covered with natural yoghurt and granola. Enjoy wonderful and refreshing freshly squeezed juices, too, including pineapple, passion fruit or orange.

There is always a ‘special’ menu at lunchtime, as well as freshly made sandwiches and wraps, gazpacho, fruit salad sprinkled with cinnamon and almonds, and the amazing banana almond pancakes, dressed with rum-maple syrup. This wonderful eatery also offers various vegetarian options and a children’s menu for the little ones to enjoy.

Ceiba Café and Pizzeria

Ceiba Cafe and Pizzeria is a family restaurant, located at the entrance of Perla Marina in Cabarete. This tasty eatery serves a variety of freshly made meals, including lasagne, eggplant parm and ravioli, all customised to suit your individual tastes. Diners can even choose which filling and sauce they require to dress their dishes and whichever meal you choose, you will be served a side of focaccia, with a spicy or garlic dip.

The Ceiba is mostly popular for its delicious, thin crust pizzas. Choose from the many interesting combinations of toppings and sauces and watch your pizza being crafted right in front of you. The portions are very generous here, and if you can’t manage to eat it all, the staff are happy to box up what’s left so you can take it away with you.

The relaxed atmosphere, excellent service, friendly staff, the free Wi-Fi and most importantly, the wonderful food means that the Ceiba Café is popular with locals and tourists alike. You can eat in, order takeaway to be delivered or collect your food and take it back to eat by the pool; whichever option you choose, you can be sure that your meal will be absolutely delicious.

Ciao Ristorante Hard Rock

The superb Ciao Ristorante is located inside the Hard Rock Hotel, in beautiful Punta Cana. In the morning, the restaurant serves a sumptuous breakfast buffet, as well as delicious made-to-order omelettes. In the evening, you can choose from the extensive à la carte menu, which offers delicious starters, from a cold cut platter of the finest deli meats, cheese and vegetables to a tasty Caprese salad.

Main courses include garlic linguine with red snapper, a tasty and delicious lamb and fish dish, chicken alfredo, lobster, seabass, shrimp tortellini, and many more. For dessert, you just can’t beat the tiramisu.

The Ciao Restaurant is comfortable, with contemporary furnishings and offers a beautiful view of the hotel’s natural gardens. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed, the service is excellent and the staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. What more could you want?

El Mosquito Art Bar

El Mosquito Art Bar – in Las Terrenas, has a cosy open-air lounge with rustic furniture and décor, beautiful fairy lights decorating the trees and an array of paintings by local artists, displayed on the exposed brick walls.

This popular bar is a truly wonderful place to sit, relax and have a delicious cocktail, or tuck into cold platter while enjoying the sun setting over the sea. The service here is great; the owners Kathy, Carola and Olivia and their staff are friendly and welcoming, the ambience is excellent and the drinks are delicious, while also being reasonably priced.

El Mosquito Art Bar is an extremely popular spot with locals and tourists, who gather here in the evening to meet friends, sip on a few drinks and enjoy live music, sometimes lounge-style and sometimes jazz. It does get quite busy as the evening progresses and peaks at about midnight, so it’s best to get there fairly early.

Filigrana, Santo Domingo

Filigrana, located in Santo Domingo, belongs to the Eboca chain of restaurants. In 2018, it won the World Luxury Restaurant Award for the best Mediterranean cuisine in the entire North American continent and has also received a certificate of excellence, awarded by the prestigious magazine Wine Spectator, for its extensive selection of fine wines.

This wonderful restaurant, with its enchanting, panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea, offers an extensive menu and is sure to please each and every palate. The Mediterranean dishes here are fused with traditional Dominican flavours, making them just that little bit different. Local, top quality produce is always used here, with most dishes being cooked on an authentic charcoal grill; adding to the unique flavour of the meal.

The ambience of the restaurant is charismatic and simply perfect, the staff are attentive and courteous and the food is delicious. So, why not join family and friends for a meal that you will never forget?

Jellyfish Beach Restaurant

Located on Bibijagua Beach in Bávaro, Punta Cana, the Jellyfish Beach Restaurant provides a beautiful setting to enjoy a delicious meal in. This popular eatery has an indoor dining room, as well as the restaurant’s stunning beachfront terrace, which is where many diners choose to eat, since it lights up at dusk. The views of the ocean from here, and the sound of steel drums playing in the background make for a very relaxing dining experience.

Diners can choose from delicious fresh fish and shellfish dishes, from sea bass, grilled lobster and coconut shrimp, to tasty pasta dishes, salads. Not forgetting the various chicken-based meals served here; enjoy chicken crepes and Dominican chicken, all beautifully cooked and presented.

The Jellyfish Beach Restaurant is also a very popular venue for weddings, with many choosing this delightful restaurant to tie the knot, thanks to its stunning location and scenic views.

Currently, there is construction work going on along the lane leading to the restaurant, however this does not detract from the experience of dining here.

KUKUA Restaurant

The KUKUA Beach Club – in Punta Cana, is a family-friendly restaurant, located on the wonderful Bavaro Beach, but with its own plush, private pool. The KUKUA serves excellent, freshly caught fish and seafood dishes, including seabass ceviche and lobster in champagne, as well as a diverse mix of tastes, from Caribbean, European and Spanish dishes.

There are also custom menus and special menu options, including West Indian and Kosher. Whether you choose to eat inside, on the beach or around the pool you will be guaranteed a tasty, well-presented meal, served by attentive and friendly staff.

The KUKUA is also a licensed wedding venue for civil, religious and symbolic wedding ceremonies. The magnificent beach-side setting, beautifully decorated dining room, exciting outdoor dance area near the pool, as well as the extensive menu choices make this spot an ideal choice to tie the knot in.

Whether you are just having a day on the beach, a romantic meal for two, celebrating a major event or holding a wedding reception, the KUKUA will do its best to make your time with them unforgettable.

Mangu Disco

The Mangu Disco, which is part of the Occidental Grand Flamenco Hotel in Punta Cana is considered to be one of the biggest nightclubs in the Caribbean. This recently renovated club has a capacity of 1,800 people, spread over two floors.

The first level here has its own disco and plays traditional Caribbean and Latin music, such as merengue, salsa and bachata, while the second level reverberates with techno, house, rock and reggae. The club also has five impressive bars and a tasty terrace restaurant, offering a variety of snacks and drinks. The largest bar located here also has a large screen, where visitors can watch popular sports, including football, baseball, boxing and racing.

Both locals and tourists flock to the Mangu Disco, to enjoy music played by international DJs and dance the night away in this wonderfully atmospheric venue, from the early evening right through to dawn.

ORO Nightclub

The ORO Nightclub is based at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Punta Cana. The two levels of the nightclub, cover an area of 14,000 square feet and have the renowned Function One Sound System, plus an amazing lighting system, which includes moving overhead lights and a dramatic two-storey high LED wall, made up of over 300 LED illuminations.

The first ever infinity edge water bar, designed by the well-known interior designer – François Frossard, is another attraction of this stunning nightclub. People flock here to party, dance and enjoy the music played by local and international DJs, especially when it is met with a themed night. A ladies only night also features at this nightclub, as well as regular live shows and concerts.

The service at ORO is amazing; the staff are extremely friendly and efficient, especially the waiters and bartenders. Plus, the safety and wellbeing of all visitors is taken care of by an efficient, but unobtrusive security team.

No food is on sale at the ORO, but there is a snack bar located outside in the Hard Rock Hotel’s Casino, if you should fancy a late-night snack or just a break from the frenzy of the nightclub.

Poseidon Restaurant and Pub

The Poseidón Restaurant and Pub in Punta Cana is situated in Plaza Bibijagua Flea Market, near the spectacular Bávaro Beach. The Poseidón is an open-air restaurant located right on the beach, offering great dining for families, a romantic dinner setting for couples, and a great place to meet and socialise with friends over a meal.

This tasty restaurant specialises in local, freshly caught seafood dishes, including paella – made up of lobster, clams, crab, fish and calamari. Another great dish served here is mariscada, which is made up of lobster tail, shrimp, clams, crabs and calamari, all cooked on the grill and then topped with a garlic sauce. Absolutely delicious.

The Poseidón Restaurant and Pub also offers a wide selection of international dishes, from steak and pasta, to chicken and buffalo wings. The wine list features delicious bottles from California, Chile, Spain and Australia, so you are bound to find something to suit your palate.
