Holidays to Tunisia

Tune out the noise on your holiday to Tunisia with a fly and flop break that makes the most of the African destination’s sunny weather and stunning coastline. There’s plenty to explore beyond the beach too, from bustling bazaars to once-in-a-lifetime desert treks.

Every day’s a sun-day

Tunisia’s Mediterranean coast delivers back-to-back beaches. Slap on the sun cream and embrace the unreal beauty of Ain Mestir beach. Think turquoise water, glistening gold sands and a jaw-dropping mountain backdrop.

Over at Plage Yeti beach, you can leave the land lubbers behind. Hop on a jet ski to skim like a stone over the waves or book a boat trip to poke your head in the coves and caves around the coast of the Tunisian paradise island of Djerba.

A market in Tunisia? How bazaar!

Tunisia’s heady souks are the perfect place to hone your haggling skills. Sure, you don’t need loose tea, concentrated perfumes or cumin powder on your summer holiday, but you’re gonna buy it anyway!

For a full North African bazaar bonanza, head to the medina in Tunis. Make like a magpie in the vaulted jewellery quarter of El Berka and sniff some serious spices at Souk El Attarine.

Sahara so good

It’s hard to believe, but some of Tunisia’s best sand is miles from the sea. Take a day or two to trek into the Sahara to see for yourself. There’s plenty of 4x4 tours, so no need to tack up a camel.

Dip your toe in the desert at Douz, the dust-covered town at the gateway of the Sahara. Or head off into the sandy abyss to camp out with the camels under the stars.

A galaxy not so far far away

Not a fan of Star Wars? Best to skip the next 59 words. Still with us? Then let’s take a trip to Tatooine.

In Tunisia, you can have a nose around Luke Skywalker’s childhood home, take a seat at Obi-Wan Kenobi’s place of exile and tear around the pod-racing track. All without setting foot in an X-wing (unfortunately). In fact, you’ll find stacks of Star Wars and silver screen sets to explore.

Things to explore

Camel rides and a sunken shipwreck

Hammamet is the Tunisian San Tropez, so golden sands and ridiculously clear waters are a given. Meanwhile, miles of shoreline means there’s plenty of room to shake off your towel. And when you need to cool down, simply grab your snorkel and head for the sunken shipwreck.

Whole fam need a tan? You’ll want Sousse. Camel rides, ice cream shacks, warm shallow waters and the finest castle-building sand will see you right. To escape it all, North African style, sink into the adorable calm of a smaller beach (and local fave) - Plage du Petit Paris. C’est magnifique!

Imazighen bites and Mediterranean delights

Tunisia’s mix of Med meals and traditional tastes is good news for your belly. Those Imazighen people sure know how to rustle up a tajine. Tickle your tastebuds with one of the best in Tunis at El Ali, in the hubbub of the medina.

For seafood straight from the Med, book waterside Le Barberousse in Hammamet. Order the seabass – you can thank us later. To see traditional Tunisian grub or cook something yourself, take a wander around the fruit and veg stalls of Tunis Marché Centrale.

The culture is very Moorish

You can take a whistle-stop tour of the old lands of the Moors at the Great Mosque in Testour or wander around the medina in Tunis. But the Santorini-esque whitewashed buildings of Sidi Bou Said are the place to see what made those Moors tick.

The Moors were not the only ones to leave their mark on this area. Head to the UNESCO World Heritage fortress, the Ribat of Sousse, to see the Roman take on Tunisian architecture. Spoiler alert – it’s an amphitheatre and crazy-beautiful mosaics.

When to go to Tunisia

Tunisian summer stretches into British autumn, so you’ve plenty of scope if you’re looking to sizzle on the sand. The sunny sweet spot is June to August when you can expect to be tan topping in temps of around 27C. Cheap holidays to Tunisia are best between November and March when highs drop to the early teens. Maybe not body-bronzing weather, but great for a meander around the medinas. For a bargain break on the beach, look to the shoulder season in May and September for cheap flights and mercury in the mid-20s.
