Situated in the Caribbean islands, Antigua is a small island that is less touristy than its tropical neighbours, so loved up couples and families have the freedom to wander around paradise without feeling crowded and rushed. Antigua is a great destination to visit all year round but especially in winter when temperatures rarely dip below the mid-20s so you’ll be able to top up that tan while it’s cold and chilly back home!
With a beach for every day of the year, you have plenty of choices when choosing which slice of sand to spend the day on. All beaches are public beaches in Antigua so even if they have luxury resorts attached to them, you’re free to enjoy. Some of the most popular are the long and wide Galley Bay with its traditional thatched roofs and Jolly Beach which is one of the biggest on the island.
One of the most spectacular experiences in Antigua is to watch the sunset from Shirley Heights. Make your way up here following the nature trail from English Harbour and, especially on a Sunday afternoon, the atmosphere is party-like as the end of the day draws to a close. Water sports are also popular in Antigua with Trade Winds in the north east of the island creating the perfect conditions for windsurfing.
As is typical in Antigua, a lot of food comes flavoured with rich spices although many places do cater for visitors and those with a sensitive palette. Fresh seafood is served alongside veg and rice and African, East Indian and Chinese cultures have all influenced the food in Antigua so expect big flavours and varied cuisine! Wadadli is Antigua’s home brewed beer which is light and refreshing – perfect after a day in the sun!
