Formerly part of Yugoslavia and just a stone's throw away from Croatia, Montenegro is a remarkable European country steeped in Balkan beauty and culture.
It is fast becoming a destination of choice for holidaymakers thanks to its typically Mediterranean climate, golden beaches, characterful whitewashed villages, lush scenery and dramatic snow-capped mountains. Expect some spots to look familiar as Montenegro has been used as a backdrop to a number of blockbusting films, including the James Bond film, Casino Royale.
Stay in luxurious accommodation looking out to the beautiful Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO-World Heritage-listed site, before meandering around old-world stone streets and exploring what lies under the terracotta rooftops in Kotor. As the sun goes down, drive half an hour to Budva, which is is the centre for nightlife on the coast of Montenegro. By day, the town is a bustling seaside resort with a riveting riviera, fascinating old town and glorious beaches. Sights not to be missed include the Cathedral of St Tryphon.
For something different, head to Skadar Lake (Skadarsko), one of the most picturesque places in Montenegro, or go hiking, ziplining and water rafting in Durmitor National Park.
