Situated on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, Puerto Banus is Marbella’s flashy neighbour. With a glistening marina filled to the brim with million dollar yachts and streets that are lined with designer shops, Puerto Banus is a great place for a luxurious break without having to break the bank.
Designed by local property developer Jose Banus in 1970, Puerto Banus was built to attract the jet-setting celebrities of its time. The port was opened with an extravagant and sophisticated party which was attended by the likes of Hugh Hefner and Princess Grace of Monaco. This party set the benchmark for the lavish lifestyle Puerto Banus wanted to provide for its visitors.
Nowadays, Puerto Banus is still very stylish and is becoming more popular year by year. If you visit, expect to spend your day poolside in one the exclusive beach clubs and in the evening you can enjoy a few drinks at one of the many bars in town. In between the pools and the bars you can take a stroll on the beach, dine in the amazing restaurants in town or even take a little trip to nearby Marbella.
If you’re spending any time on the beach in Puerto Banus, you’ll be sure to come across beach side shacks called “Chiringuitos”. Basically, these places serve food and drink and are located right on the sand. They specialise in serving up fresh fish and delicious seafood paella, plus the food is often cooked over an open fire for a true authentic taste.
With this being Puerto Banus though, it’s just as easy to find an exquisite restaurant to dine in. Dress up and go out for Thai, Mexican, Sushi or Steak, and you’ll find there’s no expense spared with the décor in the restaurants or in the creation of the food. You may pay a bit more than going to a beachside chirunguito but it’s definitely the way to experience the luxurious Puerto Banus!
One thing that Puerto Banus is famous for though is its nightlife. The bars and clubs have been attracting celebrities and holiday makers for many years with their world class DJ’s it’s definitely worth having at least one night out here! Head to Pangea or TIBU after your meal, book a VIP table with drinks and dance the night away! Although if you’re looking after the euros, grab a jug of sangria and watch the sun set over another beautiful day in Puerto Banus!
If you’re coming to Puerto Banus to catch some rays and chill on the beach, then you’ll be spoilt for choice here! With some of the nicest stretches of coastline along the southern edge of Spain it’s easy to find a spot of sand to spend the day on. Mistral Beach, with its tropical palm trees, soft sand and fun water-sports is one of the most popular among families and young couples. For the sun worshippers out there, Levante beach provides plenty of sunbeds to soak up the rays and there’s also a few chiringuitos around if you feel a bit peckish during the day. If you’re looking for a touch of luxury, Ocean Club is the place to splash out. Originally the public lido of Puerto Banus, Ocean Club has been transformed with its giant white sunbeds, pristine pool and exquisite food. It’s that well known, you may even spot a celeb or two here!
For a bit of culture on your Puerto Banus holiday, head away from the water and you’ll come across local tapas restaurants which serve up delicious meals all day long and the bars tend to be a bit quieter than around the marina. The sunny land of Gibraltar is also only a 45 minute drive away. Climb the rock of Gibraltar for views of the beautiful Costa Del Sol and the continent of Africa! You may not see much Spanish culture in this UK overseas territory but it truly is a little slice of home in the sun!
