Beaches

Ammoudara's Blue Flag beach is so appealing that it’s not unusual to find holidaymakers travelling from surrounding resorts to enjoy the golden sand, clear waters and excellent facilities. Ammoudara beach is a perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming as well as taking part in watersports; windsurfing is particularly popular here. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent and drinks can be purchased from the beachside bars.

Day Trips

Ammoudara is a great base for exploring the surrounding area; if you rent a car there are many great days out to be had just a short drive away. Head to Heraklion for shops, museums and ancient ruins, and on the outskirts, you’ll find the Minoan Palace of Knossos. A little-known activity is a hike through Almyros Gorge, which takes walkers through pleasant greenery to waterfalls and the ruins of a small monastery.

Ammoudara is known for its delicious local food; all around the resort visitors will find cafes and seafront restaurants serving fresh Greek salads, baby squid and mezze platters that are perfect for a shared snack. The nightlife in Ammoudara is livelier than you would expect for a town of its size, but there are also plenty of quaint tavernas to enjoy a quiet drink for those who want to avoid the clubs.
