Ammoudara beach is a perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming as well as taking part in watersports; windsurfing is particularly popular here. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent and drinks can be purchased from the beachside bars.

Day Trips

Ammoudara is a great base for exploring the surrounding area; if you rent a car there are many great days out to be had just a short drive away. Head to Heraklion for shops, museums and ancient ruins, and on the outskirts, you’ll find the Minoan Palace of Knossos. A little-known activity is a hike through Almyros Gorge, which takes walkers through pleasant greenery to waterfalls and the ruins of a small monastery.

Ammoudara is known for its delicious local food; all around the resort visitors will find cafes and seafront restaurants serving fresh Greek salads, baby squid and mezze platters that are perfect for a shared snack. The nightlife in Ammoudara is livelier than you would expect for a town of its size, but there are also plenty of quaint tavernas to enjoy a quiet drink for those who want to avoid the clubs.
