Check out Spaccanapoli, a street packed with old-school pizzerias and market traders. The winding alleys and side streets here simply demand to be explored. Then make a beeline for Piazza del Plebiscito. Views, volcanoes and the Bay of Naples
As incredible backdrops go, it’s hard to compete with the still active but “resting” Mount Vesuvius (yikes). But this massive, powerful force of nature is more than just something to gawp at. Take the two-hour hike to the top for epic views of the crater and the sparkling Bay of Naples. You can also catch a bus to the summit if you want to give your poor legs a break.
Naples’ coastline is just as dramatic. Think rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters and Capri island chilling off the shore (yes, of Capri pants and Caprese salad fame). Hop on a boat to cruise around the Bay of Naples, past volcanic islands and hidden coves. Or, if you fancy a little wellness treat, take the ferry to Ischia and soak in natural thermal springs!

Culture and history: Timeless treasures of Naples
For a touch of the religious, pay a visit to Sansevero Chapel to see the Veiled Christ, a jaw-dropping life-size marble masterpiece, and then set off on a church crawl – there are plenty to choose from in the City of 500 Domes. For serious opulence, the church of Gesù Nuovo is where it’s at, while the Catedral de Nápoles is home to a vial that contains the blood of Saint Januarius (patron saint of Naples). Elsewhere, take a leisurely lap around the expansive Piazza del Plebiscito, then live out your royal fantasies at the lavish Palazzo Reale. After that, pop into Museo di Capodimonte to check out beautiful works by the brilliantly talented and brilliantly named artists Titian and Raphael!
Family-friendly: Underground and on the ground adventures
If statues, churches and art museums are not your kids’ idea of fun, worry not. Naples holidays deliver enough attractions to keep everyone entertained. A case in point is the crowd-pleasing Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea), a 40-metre-deep network of tunnels, cisterns, bomb shelters and more. Back above ground, Villa Comunale Park is a lush, green wonderland, Città della Scienza puts the snap, crackle and pop into science and Posillipo and Gaiola’s beaches deliver seaside sunshine. Throw in Pompeii, Herculaneum (perfectly intact Roman ruins), Mount Vesuvius and kid-friendly food (aka pizza, pasta and gelato), and the good times will roll and roll.
Food and drink: Food at its heartwarming best
Food isn’t just food in Naples – it’s a way of life (and one we’re more than happy to get on board with.) It obviously starts (continues and ends) with its most famous culinary export, the Neapolitan pizza. Head to the walk-in-only L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele for an authentic taste of the good stuff. For a sweet treat and a caffeine fix in a grand, OTT setting, pop by Caffè Gambrinus. Order an espresso and a flaky sfogliatella (it’s got a creamy filling). If you’re craving fresh seafood, head to the bustling Mercato Porta Nolana – where fishmongers sell the day’s catch alongside mussels, clams, octopus and squid. And then wash it down with a zesty glass of local limoncello.
When to go to Naples
Any. Time. You. Want. Honestly! You see, with most of the major attractions and experiences here not pegged to any particular kind of weather, Naples is a top city break destination for all seasons.
To bag a cheap holiday to Naples, give the peak season a miss – aka the scorching months of July and August (which is still a great time to go if you don’t mind jostling with crowds and paying a little bit more).
There are plenty of bargain getaways to be had in either spring or autumn, when the weather is warm enough for basking in the sun, but cool enough to explore all Naples has to offer without sweating off your sunscreen.
