Belle Mare’s reputation precedes it; although it’s a small resort it boasts one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. Tucked into a sheltered bay, Belle Mere is a haven of calm where the only sounds are waves washing against the shore and palm trees rustling in the breeze. Expect to treat yourself here; most of the hotels are 4 and 5-star and have their own private patch of beach.
The beach at Belle Mare is spacious and extremely pretty, with plenty of public space as well as areas owned by hotel resorts. The hotel-owned sections are equipped with sun loungers for guests, while the public spaces are free for you to throw your towel down on! Watersports are available on the beach, and Belle Mare is a popular spot for snorkelling and scuba diving as visitors can see coral reefs, eagle rays and barracudas.
One of Belle Mare’s most popular activities is the Underwater Sea Walk, where visitors as young as 7 can explore the ocean with no scuba license needed! Just put on a helmet that provides you with an air supply and keeps your head dry, and enjoy a guided tour of the seabed with a qualified guide. If being in the water doesn’t appeal, the whole family can discover ocean life on a glass-bottomed boat trip.
Golf fans will be in their element in Mauritius; the island has two championship golf courses, Links and Legend, that host international tournaments. If you enjoy walking, Lion Mountain is a fairly easy half-day hike that rewards you at the top with 360° views of the island. The town of Centre de Flacq is a 20-minute drive away and has a large market where you can browse stalls and watch locals haggle for goods.
