The Grandes Playas de Corralejo (that’s “big beaches” to you and us) is the place to be for fly and flop sun worshippers. Stretching some two miles along the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park in the north of Fuerteventura, it’s made for every kind of beach day. Surf in the swell of El Dormidero, top up your tan at El Moro and stroll the promenade at El Caseron. You name it. It’s got it.
Sights, camera, action
If you’re the adventurous type, then the Canary Island’s rocky, volcanic terrain is yours to explore during a Corralejo holiday. Lace up your hiking boots and head for the trails of Montaña Roja, hop in a dune buggy to tear around desert hills and dried-up river beds, and pay a visit to the foot of the magical Montaña de Tindaya. Look out for the old school carvings here (they’re said to look like footprints).
Make a date with Mother Nature
It might be glorious on the surface, but Fuerteventura’s beauty extends underground too. The stunning Cuevas de Ajuy are just an hour from Corralejo. Cue spectacular cliff-face stairs, amazing Atlantic views and the chance to travel way back in time – some 100 to 150 million years in fact! Take a trek through the Peñitas ravine while you’re on this side of the island, too.
The ultimate island escape
Lobos Island, to the north of Corralejo, takes the beauty, vibes and general awesomeness of Fuerteventura and turns it up a big ole notch. It’s all golden sands, crystal clear waters and traditional fishing huts. Keep your eyes peeled for the great bustard (try saying that fast) and plenty more beautiful birds as you laze in the shallows. Tuck into tapas in the island’s only restaurant, stare longingly across the lagoons and then ask yourself if you really need to go home after all.

Top beaches: Days out in the dunes
Of course, no holiday to Corralejo is complete without spending a day or two or three on the windswept dunes and beautiful bays of Grandes Playas de Corralejo. But if you’re on the lookout for a classic all-in-one beach day, grab your towel and head for Playa de los Verilitos. The region’s most popular stretch of sand, it’s got sheltered shallows, sunbeds, watersports, beach bars, beach games and plenty more things you can put beach in front of. If you prefer to walk on the wild side when topping up your tan, try Playa del Pozo. What it lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for in natural beauty.
Food and drink: Wine not!
Corralejo’s banging bar scene gives you a choose-your-adventure kind of night. Kick things off with Atlantic-view cocktails at Mojito Beach Bar or hop it up at Nico’s Belgian Beer House. If you’re planning on staying out until the sun comes back up, you’ll want Loft. Think technicolour dancefloor and pounding techno until the small hours of the morning. Want to make your own kind of music? Warm up your vocal chords, form a conga and head to Flicks Karaoke & Disco Bar. A holiday’s not a holiday until you’ve screeched your way through Mr. Brightside now is it?!
Family-friendly: Abso-fuerteventura-lutely
A day out on the dunes is a must on any family-friendly holiday to Corralejo. You and your clan can work up a healthy, fun-inspired sweat by running, climbing, sliding and rolling your way around the sand. For more manmade family fun, take a trip to the nearby Acua Water Park. Over 25,000 square metres of sky-high slides, kid-friendly splash pools, jacuzzis, racetracks and games is the perfect way to cool off in the Spanish sun. Want less of the wet but still more of the wild? Take a trip to Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura. Giraffes, lemurs, camels, elephants and more await.
When to go to Corralejo
There’s no doubt that Corralejo’s beaches are at their boiling hot best between June and September. Expect temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s, the clearest of clear blue skies and a little bit of friendly competition for sun loungers – especially during the peak summer months.
For smaller crowds without giving up the sunshine, look to book a holiday to Corralejo in the extended, budget-friendly shoulder seasons. You’ll find that the sun is still well and truly shining in April, May, October and November, with max temperatures usually sitting comfortably in the low-to-mid-20s.
A winter sun getaway is also a possibility here, with highs of around 24C in November, 22C in December, 20C in January and 21C in February. Pack a light jacket, sweatshirt or cardie for the evenings.
