Belek is a smart, well-kept resort on the Turkish Riviera, where the long beach, upmarket hotel resorts and manicured golf courses give it an air of exclusivity. Purpose-built in the 80s to accommodate Turkey’s growing number of visitors, the town is dominated by 4 and 5-star all inclusive hotels and tourist amenities, but is close to several sites of cultural and historical interest and a national park.
The star feature of Belek is its beach, a 16km stretch of golden sand bordered by the enticing blue sea and backed by pristine hotels and green forest. The shallow water close to the shore is ideal for young kids, and there are great facilities including showers and changing rooms. Watersports are really popular here; you can take your pick from activities like wakeboarding, parasailing and hiring pedalos.
If you’re a golf fan, you’re in the right place! Belek is renowned for its 8 championship golf courses, where many famous names have walked the fairways. 20 minutes away is Perge, a Roman port town where visitors can see the ruins of an acropolis and the Temple of Artemis, or you can entertain the kids at Belek Aqualand waterpark, where there are pools, slides and a dolphinarium.
An hour’s drive away is Antalya, the main city in the province of the same name. Here you will find great shopping, countless restaurants and a number of historical sights. Many people arrange day trips to beauty spot Kursunlu Waterfalls or to the Koprulu Canyon National Park, where the most popular activity is white water rafting but kayaking, hiking and jeep safaris are also on offer.
