Overview

Beautiful is the only word to describe the Ionian island of Kefalonia. It remains one of Greece's most unspoilt islands, boasting white sand beaches, lush hills and pretty towns, and is far less crowded in the summer than some of Greece's more well-known destinations.

Film buffs will want to visit Sami, where a huge set was built to replicate wartime Argostoli. Near Sami is the gorgeous Melissani Lake, where Kefalonia holiday makers can take a short boat trip into the huge cavern to catch the sunlight beaming through the roof of the cave. Skala’s Blue Flag coastline is perfect for sunbathing, and there are some Roman ruins nearby if you fancy a hike.

As one of the quieter and less touristy Greek islands, Kefalonia has stayed in touch with its traditional cuisine.
