Beautiful is the only word to describe the Ionian island of Kefalonia. Shooting to popularity after featuring as the filming location of Hollywood blockbuster Captain Corelli's Mandolin, this gorgeous island has true star quality. It remains one of Greece's most unspoilt islands, boasting white sand beaches, lush hills and pretty towns, and is far less crowded in the summer than some of Greece's more well-known destinations.
Film buffs will want to visit Sami, where a huge set was built to replicate wartime Argostoli. Near Sami is the gorgeous Melissani Lake, where Kefalonia holiday makers can take a short boat trip into the huge cavern to catch the sunlight beaming through the roof of the cave. Skala’s Blue Flag coastline is perfect for sunbathing, and there are some Roman ruins nearby if you fancy a hike.
As one of the quieter and less touristy Greek islands, Kefalonia has stayed in touch with its traditional cuisine. Don't miss local favourite Kefalonia Meat Pie, which is famous across the island and can be enjoyed in nearly every restaurant around! Choose from other delights such as feta cheese, moussaka, grilled lamb and fresh seafood, and compliment the delicious food with some tasty local wine.
