Holidays to Alykanas

Overview

Offering a quiet holiday for sun lovers, Alykanas is a traditional Greek fishing village that exudes the charm typical of Zante. With golden sands, turquoise waters and verdant countryside, it is little wonder that cheap Alykanas holidays remain popular.

There is more to discover than a great place to enjoy sunny skies here, however. Wonderful Greek food and drink are plentiful, and the charming old town is a delight to spend hours walking around. With a treasure trove of ancient ruins too, it is a Mycenaean marvel for many.

To really soak up the summer sun, the best time of year to take advantage of Alykanas holidays is the peak season between June and August. Temperatures rapidly get up to the mid-20s, and often settle around the 30°C mark. Warm all year round though, Alykanas is the perfect destination for those looking for a quiet and warm destination. Spring and autumn are wonderful times of the year to explore the ruins and landscape, while a winter break here eases the stresses from back home.

Things To Do

Located in Alykon Bay, Alykanas is all about kicking back and taking it easy, and the horse-drawn carriages that canter through the streets of the resort are indicative of this. With a host of tiny shops to hunt around and splendid buildings around the squares, it’s setting among olive groves and lemon trees is delightful.

Apart from relaxing in the sun, there are plenty of shops in the old town that are perfect for picking up pretty souvenirs and handmade leather goods. Or why not collect memories and try out the mini-golf course closer to the beach which kids and big kids alike will love on a sunny afternoon!

In recent times Alykanas has become a haven for archaeologists, with recent excavations revealing Mycenaean vessels. With many experts suggesting the resort could once have been site of the ancient settlement of Arcadia, sunken buildings and awe-inspiring artefacts can now be seen.

Beaches

Alykanas has a beautiful 1200-metre stretch of sand that has plenty of space to spread out any time of year. Set against a backdrop of mountains, this beach has clear views of Kefalonia and a variety of water sports to try out. Spend an afternoon on a pedalo or take to the skies and try out the adventurous sports of paragliding! There are also plenty of beach cafes to grab a cooling drink from the afternoon sun.

Great for families, there are a number of play areas by the beach as well, while a visit to Smugglers’ Cove by boat is an exciting trip for all.

Food And Drink

Traditional tavernas are very much the order of the day here, with some truly tempting and flavoursome dishes on the menu. With terrace cafes and poolside bars, as well as a host of eateries and restaurants by the coast, eating and drinking well in Alykanas will not be a chore. Most places can be found on the main street but there are also great places hidden in Alykanas’ small alleyways.

Loud and lively nights out are not what cheap Alykanas holidays are all about, but the main strip does have a wonderful clustering of restaurants and bars, many of which are open until late in the evening. Hotels have a good level of traditional and more popular entertainment too. For couples, the Mill Bar is a must visit with its setting and cocktails.
